The drive: what to expect
Málaga to Estepona is roughly 60 km of pure Costa del Sol coastline. The autovía (motorway) gets you there in under an hour, but the real magic is in slowing down.
Take the scenic coastal road (A-7) instead. It winds through beach towns, mountain views, and hidden coves — turning a simple drive into an adventure.
The scenic route highlights
Benalmádena (20 km from Málaga): Historic hillside town with whitewashed streets, viewpoints over the coast, and excellent seafood restaurants.
Fuengirola (30 km): Beach resort with a castle ruin, paseo marítimo (seafront promenade), and genuine Spanish café culture away from the tourist centre.
Marbella (50 km): Iconic beach town with upscale dining, a charming old town, and access to the exclusive Puerto Banús marina.
Estepona (60 km): Your destination — a working fishing town mixing tourism with local authenticity. Beaches, tapas bars, and a genuine Spanish vibe.
Road conditions
The A-7 coastal road is well-maintained but winding in places. Summer traffic can be heavy (especially July and August), so start early. Petrol stations and services are frequent along this route.
Why long-term hire?
A rental gives you complete freedom to explore on your schedule — no rental car limits, no per-km charges. Stop at a beach for an hour, hike a mountain, grab lunch in a village off the main road — your car, your rules.
